Ambiguity Machines, and Other Stories by Vandana Singh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Memorable stories with an Indian flavour – words like kalpivriksha, hayathi (genetically engineered elephants) nakalchi (clones); names like Mahua, Jhingur, Langara, Somdev, Suryavati, Avinash, Sujata, Raju, Lalita rather than Tom, Dick, Harry, Mary or Jane. There is a vedic-punk/steam-punk allegorical tale from the Ramayana. There is one reminiscent of the cannibalistic classic Soylent Green by Harry Harrison.
Locales range from the terrestrial Mongolia, Gobi Desert, Mali, Italy, Siberia, Alaska, Patna and a futuristic dystopian Delhi (and also a past Dilli to vast interstellar space. Immensely readable stories that are to be read slowly and savoured.
